State of the new forums

I see some people are a little bit overreacting in the forums... I see their point, the transition was everything but smooth, because the old site was getting really buggy, and most of the users were locked out from the site.

The previous site was using a fairly complicated set up. There was two databases, one for the forums, one for the users. These two databases were (suppose to) work toogether, so the user one would manage the user accounts, and the forum one would link posts to their owners.

Then the user database got crazy.

Lots of users were just not able to log in, so most of these locked out users were creating a new account to keep coming on the forums. thesituation got nasty as we wern't able to get the original developper to fix this, or even explain how we could fix this. So we could have stayed here, see the db get nastier and nastier, or we could try to clean things up.

The idea was to get rid of the complicated system of 2 databases, and only have one to do all the jobs. And as we wanted to change things for the better, we tried to reorganise the site in a better way, more user friendly, more up to date. On this, a new design.

All this work was done by volunteers, on top of there daytime jobs. Absolutelly no money was involved in this process (and that might explain why it took so long).

Problem was, we do not know anyone who could help us transfer the data. We're still seeking, but so far, no-one stand up for the job. We could have use the forums to do this, but we didn't, thinking that we could find our ressources locally. We didn't succeed yet. I heard people saying 'all my data are LOST... No, it's not lost, it is still in the previous databases, but we now have to find out a way to get it back live. It was a complicated setting, and we're hopping to get things back.

But also, we were concerned about the community, that basicaly could not use the forum properlly. It was an criticall situation, and we had a criticall solution.

It is true though, that we should have communicate way more about this. Our bad, and we really apologise about this lack of organization. But it's now back to a clean state, and this is a huge improvment on the previous situation.

Unfortunatelly, some users are getting a little bit nasty about this transition, that's unfortunate, and if they can't get over this and want to go to another forum, then be it, there's nothing we can do about it, but stick to our plan. It is just unfortunate that after all these effort, we get insults and nasty comments, but our effort made this site back up on his feets, and that only is a great reward.

Thanks Brian for facing these attacks ! I hope this message settle things down... at least a little bit Smile !

there will always be one or two out there to put the chainsaw to our legs

perhaps

So your proposition is to bring back a forum that was buggy, and keep using it until it crashes ? And get the developer by the neck ? That sounds like smart choices.

Even if Ontario forum was 'fine', all the other weren't. You sound like a very selfish person who does not consider at any time that other communities could be handicapped by a non working forum.

As I said, we are going to try to bring things back when we can. For now, it is not possible, and your comments and complaints will not change anything to the situation. It's quite entertaining though.

And sorry but no, we will not make a special case for Ontario. This would very narrow thinking to have a separate forum for just Ontario.

This is a total clusterf*ck. I really don't know the best way to get the BC site fixed, as I do not fully understand the problem.

What I DO know is that the Ontario forum was just fine. We did have a spam bot adding users for a month or so, but that stopped a while back.
It was NOT buggy, please correct me if I'm wrong, but there were no site access issues on the Ontario side.

Please see the Ontario point of view: One day we are happily posting pictures, videos, telling stories, giving advice. 100's of members, 1000's of posts... A fairly comprehensive record of the development of kiteboarding in Ontario... And all this with no problems with the site. No warning, no explination, no request for assistance.

The next day: "we did not migrate the old data, but we're gonna try to make a dubdomain"...

As a temporary, or perminant solution to the ONTARIO side... take the Ontario forum off of this 'new' site, and create a link pointing here to the OLD skypilotkiteboaring, Ontario forum. I'm not a web developer, but I do know my way around a computer, and I think this could be done pretty easily.

I'm sure the some of the more knowledgable Ontario members would be happy to help you figure out a way to fix the BC side if you help them understand the problem.

Thank you for reading this long winded post.

The Ontario forum was not OK as I couldn't log on and post. It would have been fine until you got locked out and then you really would have been One pissed off kiter.

I've created a topic in the Ontario forum to ask if anyone had problems logging in...

what else do you need to understand ? Users were not able to log in !

moved

hopefully they will and we welcome your input thanks for understanding we hope we can correct this situation.

I read alot of stuff on the other site chicken nob ?? anyway if we didnt care about ontario forum we would have never ever had one and or we would never have put one up on the new site - so as far as egos go (as stated on the other site) we dont have any out here in the west but we do have the best greenery...lol

we also kite in shorties and even just shorts in the summer wicked warm thermal winds - but thats a different story . any way we are here they are there and you have a choice.

Have fun

Now you take the offensive and start talking about weed...

yes - we think you're cool now..

comments like "we didn't even know the ontario forum was used" and "we have the best greenery" are ignorant and just plain ugly ...

skypilot - i urge you to find adults to moderate your forums...
