Know about this one. Looks like Brunotti is running a contest with the other one.

Post your biggest kiteloop here! Height and distance. So far I've done

18.2 meters high and 62 meters long!

Here's another site:
This guy has a 3d kite simulator. It is very realistic. You can't compete in anyway though, just fly the kite around... you can adjust a few variables as well... All detailed in this link

We have some more write ups in the final edit and post phase. And will add a little more functionality to some of the existing write ups.

Check out the "how to write a beach report link", it should help explain what it is we're trying to do with the write up and answer any questions about how we put them together.

I'll second that - some really useful information. Just click local beaches at the OKA site and you can select various different beaches in a drop down at the bottom of the page. For example the page for Ashbridges:

I lived and kited in St John's for 2 years.

There are a few spots in Conception bay south - no sandy beaches, all stoney beachs and take a thick suit - I wore my steamer in the summer!!

Anything North through SW works. Summer is not as windy as you might think - the wind domes over CBS when its really hot.

Just saw this in the SBC site. Looks like Sam was able to pull off a 13th place in the course race. Never raced before, but if you check out the video, riding in that crowd would be challenging at the best of times.

You guys expecting any wind this weekend? Might be worth a road trip!

Watched Shawn and Jessie ride at Maui years ago - they were awesome to watch even then. Actually, if I remember correctly, Shawn had a bad crash and his kite was looping out of control, dragging him downwind. Jessie hopped on his board and kite looped his way down to his brother and rescued him. First time I ever saw someone beach start with a kiteloop, especially a kid!

Should be fun!

crowchild it's really a hit and miss time of the year. Long Point is the closest and most reliable spot close to Dover. You wont be able to ride right in Port Dover in August just beacause it's a complete zoo. Long Beach is another option for you but it's around an hour from Dover but if the eastern part of the lake is going off it's a better bet! But like ClippingAlong said Septemer is when it kicks in in this area.

I just happen to come across the updated OKA site and figured I let everyone know so they can check it out for them selves. If your beach is not on here let them know, and if there's no write up of your beach please contact OKA and help submit some info on your local launch, to help with access problems everywhere.

The more we info share the safer our launches will be!

The kite is a low aspect hybrid kite with a simple bridle. The kite is simplicity itself. Massive wind range, huge depower and the feel of a C kite when you unhook. Three struts make it super light and easy to pump. It has no battens or carbon in the kite. There is one colour per size and each size has its own design patterns and shaping. 6.5, 9, 12m.
Shawn Richman not only rides & competes on them but is also the North American Sales Manager.

Ask for them at your favourite kite shop.

I would suggest postponing your trip until September. :)

We may get some windy days in August, it's hard to say. The wind seems to have shifted to mostly North winds. Meaning you would need to hit lake Huron. This is about a 3 hour drive from Port Dover. If you get out early enough, you may be able to catch some kite-able morning winds (6 to 10am).

The Dover locals will tell you that you shouldn't kite there in the summer because the beach is too crowded, plus there is a pier that you can get caught behind.

Hey Chris,

I've done some sailing in St John's area and all down the southwest coast. I have seen some kiters both on Kiteforum and I think on the east coast forum on Skypilot, so there are a few. I would try a post on the east coast forum. Conception Bay is where the kiting would be which is about 15 minutes from St John's. There are lots of launch areas near the Royal Newfoundland Yacht Club, which is probably where the kiting takes place anyway. St John's Harbour is very shelter and unbelievably polluted.

A couple of things I can pass on, it is almost always windy with very few days less than 15 kts and lots that are 40 plus. The water is extremely cold, a few weeks ago my Uncle sent me some pic's of ice bergs in Conception Bay and they may still be there(not sure how to attach pic's here but I will send to your email). Water temps would never hit double digits C. There is a lot of fog, in fact in 5 days of sailing we didn't come out of the fog until 30 miles from Cape Breton but supposedly the last week of July and the 1st 2 weeks of August are relatively fog free.

Have a great time Nflder's are amazing people and the scenery (especially in Conception Bay) is amazing.
