Question About Jumping

Question About Jumping

Hey guys. I need some tips on jumping.. I have been riding all winter now, I have really good kite control can ride switch both ways, ride up wind no problem ect. I can transition back and forth without stopping as well.

My question is.. I know the whole aspect of how a jump works and such. bring the kite from 11 to 1pm ect

Now.. my question i guess would be is. Is it becuase my kites are not actually fit for jumping?

Right now during the winter im riding my 16.5 Flysurfur warrior. usually ride it 20kph winds gusting to 30 ect.

I know its a slow turning kite, I just can;t not seem to even get any glide time. the kite is huge, its like a paracute. Also I have tried the exact same approach on my 2004 15.5 Cabrinha Access kite.

I have tried poping as well, by leaving the kite at 45, cutting a bit down wind and cutting hard back up wind to load the lines. And i know for sure Im going fast enough for both types of jumping.

It just blows my mind watching guys on you tube with smaller kites and same amounts of winds flying through the sky.

Any Hints.. I think its my gear.. and i really need to upgrade. If anyone can point me in the right direction that would be great.

The reason you see guys

The reason you see guys boostin large on small kites is the speed they can fly it over the window. The smaller the kite the faster it responds. I learned to jump on a 14m C kite and although it worked my skills improved a lot once i was riding a 10m. Jumping with any 17m kite is going to be hard and if its slower than normal for its size it will be even harder. I would recommend trying a smaller kite, around 10m if you have somewhere to ride 20+knots. The faster you can turn the kite and steer it over your head the higher you will go. With a smaller kite you will find you can fly it faster than you will be comfortable with. 5 feet feels like 20 the first time... lol

You should still be able to load and pop your large kite if you are powered enough. You want as much load as possible in the board before you carve upwind to pop it. Practice this before getting back to jumping with the kite as it's a required part of jumping that way. If you are having trouble loading the board and popping out of the water (work on hooked-in railies or back rolls) you will struggle with jumping the kite, even if you do get lift you will not land facing the right way.

When jumping with the kite you want to aggressively steer the kite towards 1:00 at the same time you pop your board. Strong winds, aggressive kite flight/speed and good solid load all contribute to your height.

Hope that helps a bit, its tough to explain in words on the net Tongue

ps: the one thing i can't speak to is jumping with a foil, i have no idea what effects if any this has on jumping performance as i have always riden inflatables. I can tell you that bows jump easier but with less height (steer to 12:00 and pull the bar - elevator going up!) my fav's are the hybrids for the depower and performance but i have not ridden any of the new c-kites which are supposed to have almost as much depower with even better performance. The hybrids and C's you steer to 1:00.
